Before the success of blended whisky in the late 19th Century, there was Single Malt Whisky; the original whisky from Scotland made of malted barley, water, and yeast. Typically associated with single malt Scotch, Single Malt Whisky is malt whisky from a single distillery.
Like grain whiskies, their maturation takes place in oak casks in Scotland. It is the casks that contribute to the flavour of the final product. The whiskies from various distilleries have each a unique character, as a result of different factors and conditions. For example, the length of maturation, how often an individual cask is used in the maturation, and whether the cask is made from European oak or American oak.
