Brandy is a type of spirit produced by distilling fruit wine, often drunk as a digestif. They exist in varieties. The naming is sometimes after the grapes or their place of origins such as Cognac and Armagnac.
The ageing of brandies usually takes place in wooden casks after the distillation, though there are some with caramel colouring to imitate the effect of ageing. There are also some produced using a combination of ageing and colouring.
The best way to serve Brandy is neat, and at room temperature. This, however, does not restrict one from using it as a base for cocktails, such as the Metropolitan.
